17th and 18th centuries bag

The Harness Pride

The 17th and 18th centuries saw the good use of bags and purses for carrying women’s personal items. Besides the belt, bags and purses could also be hung on the “harness”, alongside keys, sewing implements, and a knife sheath, in the 17th century. A harness is a hook with chains and the accessories hanged from it. A hundred years later, it was not just a practical accessory, the aristocrats and the rich, visibly flaunted silver or gold harness like jewels. The harness became popular amongst the rest of the population and around 1830, the harness was named ‘chatelaine’.
